10 good reasons to visit Ribérac ...

- We speak French…but at the Friday market you can buy English novels, English CDs, English porcelain, English paintings.
- We eat French food…even in restaurants under English ownership…
- We drink after the French fashion…at aperitif time, at a table on the terrace of a ‘typically French’ bistro, surrounded by drinkers who are ‘so British’…
- We drive on the right…even if the “keep right” signs at the entries to the town remind the scatterbrains that they have crossed the Channel…
- We play rugby…even if the rules are different …
- We are chauvinistic … so “bed and breakfast” lodgings are called “chambres et tables de hôtes”…
- We are connected to the Internet … even if some till have problems with sending "courriels" …
- We are close to Bordeaux and its ‘chateaux’… even if we prefer them as ‘grands crus’
- We are close to Cognac … where the main producers are called Martell and Hennessy …
- Here you are … at home !

There are even brochures in French if you can’t understand those translated into English!
And then, you see, if you decide to come, it’s almost a direct route from Waterloo. Take the Eurostar to Paris; enjoy a short walk
between stations to catch the TGV (from Montparnasse, not Austerlitz) to Angoulême where an
English friend will be waiting for you with his right-hand-drive car. You will feel at home,
and an hour later you’ll be in Place de Gaulle, Ribérac. |
